In Dalston, 2018 AD, a man and a woman invite you to watch a re-enactment.
Collantinus’s wife Lucretia is the only wife not found betraying her husband when a group of soldiers returns home unexpectedly to check on them. Her loyalty and fidelity make her a target. At the goading of a betrayed husband, Prince Tarquinius is determined to test Lucretia’s resolve. He cannot believe that she would not desire him and fall to his charms and his actions led to ruin.
The first of Benjamin Britten’s chamber operas, opera specifically written for small groups of musicians and vocalists, The Rape of Lucretia is considered an evocative and haunting masterpiece. Following her astounding productions of Madama Butterfly and Tosca, rising star Julia Burbach returns to Grimeborn to direct a daring new staging, turning the lens on the representation of women from ancient myths to the #MeToo movement. This production features live music and is performed in English.
