The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4 is back in London with affordable tickets now on sale.
The Ambassadors Theatre is one of the West End’s most intimate and historic venues, known for hosting bold, innovative plays and long-running productions. Tucked away on West Street near Covent Garden, the theatre offers a uniquely close-up experience that immerses audiences in the action on stage. Its compact design and rich heritage make it a favourite for both classic revivals and contemporary works.
Best known as the original home of The Mousetrap, the world’s longest-running play, the Ambassadors continues to champion dramatic storytelling in a beautifully preserved Edwardian setting.
Opened in 1913, The Ambassadors Theatre was designed by W.G.R. Sprague, who also designed its neighbour, the St Martin’s Theatre. It was one of the smaller venues of the Edwardian theatre boom, with an intimate capacity ideal for dramatic and avant-garde work.
In 1952, it became legendary as the original home of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, which ran there for over 21 years before transferring next door. Over the decades, it has staged everything from politically charged plays to successful West End transfers and Off-Broadway hits. It was briefly renamed the New Ambassadors Theatre in the 1990s before reverting to its original name.
Today, the theatre remains a key space for new writing and acclaimed productions in London’s vibrant theatre scene.
The Ambassadors Theatre is located on West Street, just off Shaftesbury Avenue in the heart of the West End. It’s directly next to the St Martin’s Theatre and steps away from Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and Soho — surrounded by bars, restaurants, and cultural landmarks.
The closest tube station is Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly Lines), just a 2-minute walk away. Covent Garden station (Piccadilly Line) is also nearby, around a 5-minute walk from the theatre.
Charing Cross station is about a 10-minute walk, offering National Rail services and Bakerloo/Northern Line access.
Several bus routes serve the Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue area:
Day routes: 14, 19, 24, 29, 38, 176 Night buses: N5, N19, N20, N29, N38, N41
Nearest stops: Cambridge Circus, Leicester Square Station
With a capacity of around 444 seats, the theatre is split into two levels: Stalls and Circle. The compact layout ensures exceptional acoustics and a close-up view from almost every seat, offering an intimate and engaging theatrical experience.
This small size makes it particularly suited for character-driven plays and productions where audience connection is key.
Step-free access is available to the foyer and a limited number of seats in the Stalls. The venue also offers accessible toilets and infrared hearing systems. Due to its age and size, some areas may be less accessible — guests are advised to contact the theatre ahead of time for assistance and accessible seating options.
The theatre implements standard West End safety procedures, including bag checks at entry, clearly marked exits, and trained safety personnel. Enhanced cleaning protocols and hand sanitiser stations are in place for audience wellbeing.
There is no formal dress code at The Ambassadors Theatre. Guests typically wear casual or smart-casual attire, with comfort being the main priority. While some may choose to dress up for evening performances, all styles are welcome.
